Summary/Abstract: In the 1990s, researchers of the National Museum History of Moldova conducted a survey on the territory near the village of Varniţa, where, according to the written and cartographic data, was located the last camp of King Charles XII of Sweden. As a result of the survey, the museum acquired part of the land and created a branch of the museum “Military Camp of Charles XII”. In 1993, in the area of the memorial obelisk set in 1920 by the Government of Romania at the request of the Swedes, was conducted a research which has revealed the remains of a stone building and artifacts of the early 18th century. At present, the National Museum of History of Moldova is working on a project of wide-scale excavations in the former camp of Charles XII, with a view to its subsequent recovery and museification.
