Summary/Abstract: The publication of the academic portraits gallery reunited under the posthumous memorialistic work of professor Ion Didilescu, Universitari din alte vremuri (University men of other times, Didilescu, 2010), offers to the reader the lecture of a text very rich in psychological observations and analysis, focused both on the affective-emotional dimension of the academic personality and on the sentimental load determined by his relationship with students, colleagues and friends. Amongst the personalities included in the volume, one must distinctively observe that of the renowned university professor Ion Petrovici – remarkable writer and orator. The sentimental portrait dedicated to him by the memorialist Didilescu highlights not only the features of his perfect oratory art, but also the absolute balance of Petrovici’s personality, his sense of justice, the courage and the imagination he showed in situations of emotional tension and conflict, in order to help his colleagues even with the risk of compromising his personal status. The high admiration for the aesthetics of his speech, dialogue ethics and interhuman relationship illustrated by Ion Petrovici does not determine Ion Didilescu to minimalize the intellectual merits of his maestro, whom he considers to be „a brilliant promoter of the rationalism and critical realism”. In fact, the only field of Petrovici’s activity that the author refrains from commenting is the political one. The memorialist highly appreciates both his ex-cathedra and writing performances, but highlights the fact that oratory was, for Petrovici, la qualité maîtresse – his fundamental talent, identifiable in his entire oeuvre.
