Summary/Abstract: The present study seeks to highlight the changes introduced by modernizing law in the penitentiary system during the reign of Al. I. Cuza. The first changing concerning the prison system in the Romanian Principality was introducing Moldova by the French engineer Ferdinand de Dodun Perrières, during the reign of Prince Grigore Alexandru Ghica. Regulation drawn up by him in 1856 to Moldavia, was then adopted into an expanded form during the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The new legal regulations, developed in the spirit of ensuring organizational and institutional continuity, establish the staff, the organization, administration and maintenance of prisons, as well as the status and regime of detention of detainee. In the application of the low, in this time, was many problems encountered, generated mainly by the lack of necessary funds.
