The Planets Have Their Own Faculties and Divine Wisdom: The Astrological Doctrine of Firmicus Maternus

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the work of Firmicus Maternus dedicated to the science of Astrology – Matheseos Libri VIII – written in IV c. A.D. He is almost alone as author of works produced both before and after an apparent conversion to Christianity. The “Mathesis” can be regarded as a summation of the trends of the fourth century, one of the great statements of the thoughts and feelings of pagan Rome. The article shows that it is also an extraordinary historical document, expressing by the means of the Astrological science the range of problems, illnesses, windfalls, and successes of the people history neglects.
