Summary/Abstract: The article examines the most prominent figures among the founders of the Classical philology inBulgaria: their personal qualities and their influence on the development of Classics in the Bulgarian academic environment. The modern status of Classics in Bulgaria, the foundation of the only classical high school and its perspectives are also analyzed. The text traces the impact of the classical education on the Bulgarian scientific humanitarian society and raises some questionsabout the necessity of studying the Latin and Ancient Greek languages and cultures as a part of the obligatory curriculum atthe university and high school. The first part of the article examines the usage of the word philology in Antiquity, its etymologyand its meaning through the times. The meaning of the word classical is also examined. The beginning of the Classical Philologyas a university discipline is traced to its roots back to the 18-th century and its founder Friedrich August Wolf. The authorargues that the Classical philology and Classics are an intransient value and they bring to the modern world the inheritance ofancient humanism. For that reason they should be studied as a basic humanitarian discipline in the modern educationalinstitutes.
