Summary/Abstract: As the legacy of an imperial colonial past is defining for the culture of many contemporary nations, in the present article we sought to outline a pattern of cultural development applicable to the countries that, at one point or another, gained their independence from the British Empire. Most attention is given to the relatively paradigmatic American case and to the various stages in the development of a distinct American cultural voice building on the legacy of Empire. References are also made to the specific circumstances that defined the specificity of post-cultural development in other former parts of the British Empire, generally following the distinction between settler and invaded communities.
