Summary/Abstract: In his essay the author comments on the current status of the German language in the European context. He mentions many paradoxical situations in Austria where English is used although the interlocutors can speak German. This happens despite the official legitimate criticism and all reasonable expectations. Therefore, the question arises, on the one hand, whether there are good reasons to learn German, but on the other hand, if there are in fact any interested individuals who promote personal or professional communication in German across borders and wish to combine their career prospects with the German language.
