The role of mobile phones in overcoming speaking anxiety during foreign language lessons

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to emphasize the development of communicative competence with reference to the documents which are essential in the Polish educational system (i.e. the core curriculum). First, attention will be given to the occurrence of reluctance to speak in a foreign language, which can be attributed to speaking anxiety. In this connection, some symptoms of anxiety will be presented. Second, the role of mobile phones or smart phones as a means of decreasing this kind of anxiety is discussed and the ways in which they can be employed during foreign language lessons are presented, with emphasis being placed on demonstrating their utility in creating blogs, pictures or films. It will be argued that, as a result of such activities, learners are given a chance to overcome speaking anxiety and to be more effective foreign language learners.
