Summary/Abstract: In the continuity of the Guillaumian theory: the integration of the pathic mode and the gnostic mode defined by Erwin Straus in the system of tongue. This paper argues that the pathic mode and the gnostic mode, two key-notions coined by the German psychiatrist Erwin Straus, can be envisaged in the light of the Guillaumian theory. The pathic mode refers to the sheer sensing of phenomena, which is to immediate, preverbal communication, whereas the gnostic mode has to do with perception through the logic of thought processes and language. The grammatical reading of Malcolm Lowry’s short-story, Elephant and Colosseum, will show how an animal metaphor may articulate these two modes within a writer’s discourse.
