Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts at bringing some order into research on the Old-Polish synonymy and redefining terminology used in analysis of old texts. The assumptions have been applied in the scrutiny of ten Gospels translated into Polish in the 16th century. The 16th century was the age of significant changes in the Polish language. One of the factors that contributed to the process was the Reformation, which lead to a schism in the Roman Catholic Church and to the Bible being translated into national languages. Through various methods of translation, the Polish lexis expanded. A comparison of selected Polish translations of the Gospels exhibits complicated semantic relations between the studied lexical units.
