Summary/Abstract: This work encompasses the establishment, organization and functioning of madrassas in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the special emphasis on the characteristics and the role of the madrasa in Zvornik. In the historical sources and relevant literature, this madrasa is mentioned under several toponymic names, such as: ‘Zvornička medresa’, ‘Podrinjska medresa’, ‘Drinska medresa’. It has not been reliably established when the first such school was founded in Zvornik and who its patron was. Podrinje’s madrasa belonged to the lower ranks of madrassas and it functioned with larger or smaller interruptions until 1946. Until today, only ruined building of madrasa and several dozen books and manuscripts that belonged to its library have been preserved. Without a doubt, Podrinje’s madrasa in Zvornik had a very important role in religious education and spiritual formation of the Muslims of Zvornik and Zvornik region.
