Summary/Abstract: The question when and how the Romanian ethno-genesis took place is controversial. Noticing the similarity between the social organization known as obştea and the covenantal organization of Early Christians this work argues that the Romanian culture and language came into existence as a consequence of the Roman retreat. The political vacuum thus created accelerated conversions to Christianity and the formation of covenantal Christian communities. These communities later called obşte constituted the cradle of a new Christian ethnos which evolved into the modern Romanian nation.
