The East and Centre as States of Mind, or Mental Colonization in the Texts of Ziemowit Szczerek

Summary/Abstract: The prose and reporting of Ziemowit Szczerek has filled a gap in Polish reflections on Central European and Slavic culture, and has also drawn attention to the complexity of Polish-Ukrainian relations after 1991. In this sketch, the author traces how these concepts and issues are described by Szczerek. The heroes of Szczerek’s texts provide an interesting example of the self-colonization of minds and belief in conspiratorial, revisionist historical narratives, called by the author a symptom of “secondary imperialism” in the political and historical discourses of Central European societies.
