Summary/Abstract: The paper draws on selected episodes from Plato’s dialogues to examine the manifestations of his effort to think the matter – the matter as such over against different kinds of the matter – which Plato does without introducing an operative notion for the matter, using metaphorical names for it instead. The exposition accounts for the interpretative tradition and contemporary debate on the issue. Plato’s attempts to think the matter surface in a juxtaposition of two thematic perspectives, by describing the demiurge’s, the divine maker’s, creation of the world over against the work of a craftsman, the worldly maker.
