Summary/Abstract: Although many definitions of the armed conflict concept can be identified at the international community level, the legal standards contained by the special juridical branch of International Humanitarian Law applicable, namely the Geneva Conventions and the Additional Protocols, do not provide a precise definition of the concept. The main generating source of rules in the domain remains state’s practice, conducted in accordance with both the special provisions and the general provisions represented by the United Nations Charter. Even though the deployment method of armed conflicts has undergone important mutations in a relatively short period of time, from a symmetrical character of means to an astounding asymmetry by its novelty and complexity, even for the responsible structures, the four types of armed conflicts identified at the international level kept their individuality, continuing to produce irreversible effects worldwide.
