Summary/Abstract: Trying to defend the universal nature of morality, this paper compares the two positions expressed by Muslim thinkers on the issue of relationship between religion and morality: religious morality and moral religion. The author believes that the first position ends in ethic relativism (the relativity of morality). Therefore, following a critical analysis of such views, the author also indicates the consequences of ethical relativism, and underscores the need to differentiate between ethics and law (i.e. the science of morality /’ilm al akhlaq and Islamic law/’ilm al fiqh). He believes that things normally denoted as god and evil in religious morality are not, in fact, ethical categories, but rather part of Islamic law and religious legal (Shari’a) norms.
