Summary/Abstract: The life and work of Gazi Husrev-bey have been studied and presented thanks to the work of numerous researchers who have shed light on this great statesman, military commander and benefactor. This paper, however, deals with an unknown segment of his great legacy, the one intended for the city of Sarajevo: the establishment of an economic basis for smooth functioning of his legacy. He endowed an entire county in Dalmatia, in the hinterland near the town of Zadar, originally won after conquering the area. The county was named Kožulova and its status was that of mulk, with the full name of Čifluk Kožulova. It was made up of several villages almost entirely inhabited by Vlachs, who were slowly becoming permanent residents. They paid a reduced poll tax, deposited in the sultan’s treasury, and the income generated by their agricultural activities was assigned to the waqf. This area remained under Ottoman rule until late XVII century, when it was transferred to Venice. However, it remained an unsafe area, the site of numerous conflicts due to wars between the two states and the ever-present banditry in the so-called peaceful times. However, on the basis of detailed census data of the Ottoman administration covering XVI century (because the 1604 census reflected the situation of the period preceding that year), there are no sources allowing an insight into the XVII century situation in the Kožulova county.
