Summary/Abstract: The establishing of the “absolute” etymology of anthroponomical (personal) place names requires either field research for recent names or investigation of old documents containing information on previous owners. The fiscal censuses or inventories (Catagrafii) compiled by the Treasury of Moldova in the first part of the nineteenth century preserve the landowners and taxpayers (or non taxpayers) thus offering etymological solutions for some village names formed at that time or in the twentieth century. Based on the volumes containing lists of these censuses we clarified the etymologies of some village names (Balercari, Borşani, Bostăneşti, Dărieşti, Davidoaia, Găinarii, Novăceşti, Străteni, Tuta, Ungureni, Ursăreşti, Vetreşti).
