The Professional Basketball Linguistic Landscape in France, an Example of “Bilingual Technolect”

Summary/Abstract: In this article, we’ll look into the basketball environment, and more precisely into the professional basketball linguistic landscape in France. Indeed, this sport’s American and American-English speaking countries origin, its progressive spread across the Atlantic, its development as an institutional sport and its professionalization leaning on the progressive opening of borders (since the 1957 Rome Treaty) make of the French professional basketball players a particularly heterogenous and surprising group, in (the heart) of which sportsmen of different nationalities, languages and cultures are not only in contact, but also and above all, have to work – practise and play – together and be high performers.In a contemporary synchronic perspective, we’ll focus the communication and terminology specific to this professional milieu, and propose a questioning on the concepts of terminology and “bilingual technolect”
