Summary/Abstract: Tim Ingold is one of the most interesting contemporary anthropologists, whose works became a source of inspiration not only for other anthropologists, but also for architects, archaeologists, and artists. Although Ingold writes about a variety of topics in a vivid, almost poetic manner, his publications link consistent, original, and ever-evolving theory. The aim of this paper is a reconstruction of Ingold’s theoretical proposal. The present text is the first of a three-part study that will be published in subsequent volumes of “Ethnography”. This section presents Ingold’s considerations regarding the environment (the nature-culture dichotomy) and the elements that form its essence, i.e. weather – “things” (subject--subject dichotomy). In the following articles the author shall present Ingold’s views of the organisms and perception and will try to merge all the elements in order to close the series of articles with a conclusion regarding the possible use of Ingold’s theory in ethnographic research, including sensory ethnography.
