Summary/Abstract: In his numerous publications, Anthony Giddens addresses the issue of self-identity of modern man. The philosopher can be qualified as a narrativist. He considers identity as a reflexive project that takes place in time. The construction of self-identity is not a simple task to accomplish. The human being who wishes to determine their self, faces various problems, which are difficult to defend from. Giddens studies the tribulations of the self which emerge in the course of building one’s identity. He also classifies the dilemmas of self in the following pairs of terms: unification versus fragmentation, powerlessness versus appropriation, authority versus the uncertainty, personalised versus commodified experience. Disembedding processes of globalization can also be added to this list. All of these problems can cause insecurity and lack of sense. The article aims to reflect on tribulations of the self presented by Anthony Giddens. Consequently, the author of the article attempts to answer the question whether the discussed issues are still relevant, and whether they can be applied to the new generation of youth raised by mass media.
