Summary/Abstract: With the 19th century French writer Maxime Du Camp there is a close link between travel and a fascination with death (attraction and repulsion at the same time), which invades the pages of his travel stories and which from his perspective ennobles nature and life itself. The writer’s feelings of death, loss, suffering give him a privileged status, since in nature, as in the work of art, death can engender life.
