Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to point the role of empathy and its conditions in social rehabilitation work undertaken by personnel form juvenile detention centers and reformatories. Empathy plays crucial role both in creation of social bond between stuff and inmates and in communication oriented on emotional arousal and transformation of attitudes. Stuff actions basing on empathy toward juveniles used to determine their compassion. On the other hand empathy can bring also negative consequences when personnel empathizes with victims. The conclusions presented in this paper come from seven years of qualitative study carried out in correctional institutions of all types in Poland. There was applied triangulation of methods, researcher and data. Empirical data is analyzed from the perspective of interpretative paradigm that enables to catch interactive dimension of empathy role.
