Questions of Identity: Rastko Petrović and Cultural Studies

Summary/Abstract: This paper is based on the assumption that Rastko Petrović’s work anticipates the contemporary understanding of identity as a construct, as a complex and dynamic mesh comprised of identity constituents that constantly overlap, creating ambivalent subject positions. This research focuses on cultural, gender, and narrative identity, that is, on the modes of their construction analysed from the methodological perspective of interdisciplinary field of cultural studies. Using multiple theoretical approaches which reveal the relational and strategic nature of identity axes, it is shown how Petrović’s life and his poetics represent the paradigm of cultural, gender and narrative liminality. In this sense, the non-space of the threshold (limen) which always ensures that there is a kind of a new beginning, casts the light on Rastko Petrović’s effort to bring life into the art through the processes of constant selfexamination and renewal.
