Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the question of how authenticity should be defined and looked for. The search for authenticity is visible in various spheres of life, but especially in tourism. The present analysis is rather theoretical than empirical, and contains two theses. According to the first one it is very difficult to discern the meaning of authenticity which is denied by untruth, lies, hypocrisy, pretentiousness, falsity, insincerity, artificiality, forging and faking. Nowadays, a lot of artefacts of culture are just like that: superficial and not authentic enough. According to the other thesis the search for authenticity is being carried out in the times that have hardly anything to do with authenticity; that is to say, in modern times the world is faked and completely artificial.
