Summary/Abstract: Induction by ambiguous scenario (IAS) is an effective method of tracking the central representational elements. Its development started from the idea that any social representation expresses, in fact, an active process of building reality. Whenever we decide to put this method into practice, we should keep in mind that we are only interested in the cerebral constructions that subjects use to recognize an object of representation with among other close similar objects. The perationalization of the IAS expresses a multiphase process: (1) the elaboration of a preliminary informational material with respect to the contents of a certain social representation; (2) the ambiguous description , based on the informational material already developed, of the object of the social representation under consideration (the ambiguity refers to the fact that the text/scenario may as well refer or not to the object of the representation); (3) the delimitation of the items that might fit the object of representation; and (4) the segregation of the items separated into two distinct categories--items that are not selected unless an explicit reference is made to the object of the representation (=items that are specific for the central nucleus of the studied representation), and items that correspond only partially to the object of representation (=items that are specific for the peripheral elements of the studied representation).
