Summary/Abstract: This study aims to discuss and analyse a specific category of ceramic objects dated to the Early Eneolithic in the Lower Danube region, the so called parallel-piped stands. There are few discoveries of this object type and it has been rarely discussed by archaeologists. The shape of the parallel-piped stands seems to be a local invention of the Boian - Polyanitsa - Karanvo V communities, lasting about 300 years (ca. 4900-4600 cal. BC) on the both sides of Lower Danube. We have analysed 15 stands (5 were fragments and 10 were completely restored). Our analysis involved macroscopic observations in order to reconstruct the major production stages (paste preparation, manufacture methods, decoration, firing conditions, and after-firing treatment). Another aim was to interpret the function of these objects. Deep abrasion traces occur on the bases and the edges of the upper holes of most of the analysed objects. Some stands have preserved inside traces of soaked soot. These observations, together with some contextual information, lead us to interesting hypotheses concerning the life cycle and utility of the parallel-piped stands.
