An Evaluation on the Tradition of Fortune Telling of Turkish Coffee in Mugla

Summary/Abstract: Curiosity about future and unknown such as knowing the result of an issue supposed to be done beforehand, learning one’s destiny, perceiving lucky attemptions, appointing the lucky time for the job wished to be done. Especially young girls, brides, widows demand for an application called “fortune-telling” that includes the comments to satisfy the curiosity talked about. Among various fortune-telling, prevalence of “fortune-telling of coffee” draws attention to a cultural circle formed around a beverage called “coffee”. Serving coffee, which is often consumed at homes, during friend visits and on reception days, with cofee-grounds has brought out the tradition of fortune-telling. In this article; firstly, descriptions of “fortune-telling” in different dictionaries and encyclopedies are studied and evaluations related to subject of oral resources in the area of the study took place. Then, information about fortune-telling, fortune-tellers and ones whose fortunes are told is given. Determinations and comments on the individual and social functions have been done by mentioning structural characteristics of coffee-fortune. Related to this, material collected from Muğla region is the base while research and assesments are being done about fortune-telling that has been researched structurally and functionally. Eventually, it’s believed fortune-telling of Turkish coffee that caused a tradition, peculiar to itself, formed will keep its funtions as lons as coffee exists.
