Popular Music As an Integral Factor of Junior School Age Learner Musical Education

Summary/Abstract: In the contemporary society, primary education of a child is regarded as one of the basic educational policy priorities. The said period of life, if passed successfully, guarantees the right development of a personality and provides preconditions for further lifelong learning. Changes ongoing in the political, economic, social and cultural life of the country, as well as development of the information society and globalisation have impact on the change of values, predetermine musical novelties. The challenges of the changing society are resulting in a state of musical education requiring a tighter interaction between musical culture and education that would motivate not to lose touch with the musical environment that is familiar to the learners, as well as to exploit the potential of popular music in order to extend the contact between musical education and personality development. This means that popular music is becoming a necessity determining the significance of applying it in the educational process and purposeful development. Integrating popular music into primary musical education helps implement one of the most Important objectives, i.e. To provide learners with the necessary musical literacy, which is helpful while paving the way for selfunderstanding and positive relations with other people. The research indicates that popular music has an exceptional status in the scale of values among junior school age learners. Having analysed the peculiarities of school learner musical interests, the results allow stating that the majority of the learners indicate popular music as one of the most significant factors while disclosing interconnections between learner musical activities and attitudes towards popular music. Popular music is accessible easier, more widespread and liked in comparison with other genres. Therefore, it has great impact on children's musical interests. Due to the above reason, its application in the educational process is important when seeking elaboration of musical and valueoriented education. The following factors should be regarded as ped-agogical preconditions for junior school age learner musical education with integration of popular music: 1) connection of musical education objectives with popular music; 2) orienting musical activities in the emotional-logical direction, envisaging possibilities of fostering school learner spiritual values in the contents of education; 3) developing an atmosphere of teacher-learner communication and cooperation based on mutual reliance.
