Summary/Abstract: Based on the Torah and Quran, the tale of Yusuf and Züleyha has been told both as a mathnawi and folk tale for centuries. The tale was recreated in terms of place, plot and characters through being reedited in mathnawis. Then, it spread among people and as a folk tale, it changed completely as if it had been a different text. In this study, taking four narrations – a folk tale and three mathnawis- as examples and analyzing the variations and episodes of the tale “Yusuf and Zülayha”, we tried to find out poems and patterns in the tales. It has been understood that although episodes are told almost in the same order in each text, an episode may get weaker in a text, while it is stronger in another variation. As for patterns, it is found out that based on oral narration, the folk tale is richer in terms of pattern than the other three mathnawis, but poorer in poetry. In conclusion, as a folk tale and mathnawi, the tale of Yusuf and Züleyha still exists as an important text in our literary and cultural life, and still draws attention of researchers because of its episodes and patterns.
