Summary/Abstract: The Slovenian scientific community has been critical of the phenomenon of dispersed housing of the last several years, seeing it as irrational in public utility, technological, functional and aesthetic terms. Although it results, among other thing, in the degradation of cultural landscapes, legislation has recognised it only as a terminological term. The absence of methods for determining dispersed housing thus leads to a lack of standardisation, and confusing municipal and communal spatial plans, which provide a completely different approach to the human settlements in rural areas. The article deals with various approaches to identifying dispersed housing in municipal and communal spatial plans. In a case-study of the Commune of Tabor, a more detailed possible methodology is presented, whereas in the example of the Municipality of Šoštanj, all potential problems concerning the determination of dispersed housing are introduced.
