Summary/Abstract: This paper investigates some of the key fragments of modern reality within which the relation between the private and public was negotiated. The transformation of the physical boundary of the house was essential to this process. In Victorian culture, the external boundary of the house was unambiguously identified as one dividing the private and public spheres of life. Modern architecture, however, constructed multiple realms of the private and public, assigning this boundary a variety of new meanings and significantly modifying its physical appearance.
