Summary/Abstract: Highly energy-efficient family homes emerged in Slovenia around 2005, and were becoming more numerous in 2008. Their energy-efficiency varies from passive houses (amount of energy required annually to heat the house maximum 15 kWh/ (m2a)) to very good low-energy houses (15 to 25 kWh/(m2a)) and low-energy houses (25 to 40 kWh/(m2a)). Approaches to their design differ from established practices and must take into consideration the latest discoveries and guidelines. The article presents an investigation of 106 energy-efficient buildings, recording their size, number of occupants, location in space, shape factor, type and quality of thermal envelope, annual amount of heat required for heating and sanitary water. Analyses were made of key parameters impacting energyefficiency of buildings, and the guidelines essential to their design and optimisation were highlighted.
