Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the use of models in the design process and highlights the changes introduced to this field by new digital modes of design and implementation. Architecture has always taken cues from technology for new modes of work and representation. The development of computer software for architects is being complemented by new forms of production that enable realisation directly from computer files. Layered technologies enable fast and precise production of complex geometries, thereby changing the relation between idea and its realisation. They allow the designer to control in a short time a digitally design form and on the basis of this control to carry out eventual corrections. The possibility of instant control may significantly influence the method of employing physical media in the design process, as well as enhance the performance of computer tools. We surmise that the use of digital production technologies within the design process will re-define the role of working models and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge within the profession about the potential and limitations of this mode of production, as well as encourage the spread of the digital process to the realisation stage of architecture.
