Summary/Abstract: The history of architecture is a history of continuing efforts to bridge ever-increasing spans and, accordingly, ever-increasing spaces. More than two thousand years of such development can be found in any history of architecture treating monumental buildings made from solid and durable materials. Mass housing construction, however, usually used less durable materials. The choice of a construction system, and spans and dimensions of space were limited by practical issues regarding the properties of material, functional requirements and building types. This holds true both for institutional and private practice. The central European area dealt with here in the last hundred years reveals a complex interdependence between materials, standardised semi-products, standardised rooms and flat sizes, material/labour cost ratios and settlement pattern.
