Development of Information Technologies in an Information Society: Premises for Creation of a Knowledge-Based Society in Lithuania

Summary/Abstract: New information technologies are rapidly penetrating our working environment. Knowledge is becoming the basis of the modern economy and the main condition creating the knowledge-based economy, which stimulates production of IT-related goods. The development of modern information technologies has created a new concept of mankind – an information society. In this particular work the history of the development of an information society has been analyzed ant the importance of the new concept for the modern economy has been evaluated. The relation between innovations in information technologies and the development of knowledge-based organizations has been crystallised. In conclusion it has been agreed that knowledge is becoming the most important tool competing in the international economy. Big attention has been paid to the situation in Lithuania. On the basis of the research made by the Department of Statistics under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania the level of the development of information technologies and an information society in the country has been evaluated. At the end of the work the main purpose has been achieved: the main ways of further development of an information society and, as a result, the knowledge-based economy, have been formulated and proposed.
