The article presents an analysis of development of the concept of managerial qualities. Managerial qualities are defined in the article as personal traits, individual abilities, acquired competences, skills and knowledge that make a basis of a manager‘s competences. The article analyses organisation of activities aimed at development of managerial qualities, discerning the following stages of this development process – identification of development needs, identification of development objectives, identification of development contents, selection of methods, assessment of development results. The focus is made on analysis and selection of development methods and assessment of expedience of the methods. Methods for development of managerial qualities are classified into three main groups: information presentation methods, modelling methods and in-job training methods. Surveys of expedience of methods for development of managerial traits and qualities and successful application of such methods are generalised. The article presents the results of survey of Lithuanian businesses managers exploring the methods applied for development of managerial qualities. Respondents’ opinion on expedience of the methods applied for development of managerial qualities is generalised. Data is gathered having conducted a survey of executives of 77 Lithuanian enterprises, who were presented with a questionnaire with open and closed (demographic type) questions. Statistical data of the survey was processed with the aid of Excel spread sheet and Statistical package for the Social sciences SPSS 15.0. It was found that the respondents evaluating the tools and measures for development of managerial qualities had a positive attitude, thus a positive attitude prevails in the evaluations. Information presentation and in-job training methods were mentioned both among the most useful and the least useful ones. Modelling methods were hardly mentioned in both categories of expedience assessment; that allows to conclude that they are not popular or/and there are no qualified specialists that would be able to apply them for development of managerial qualities. The results of the research are relevant for identification of effective methods for development of managerial qualities.
