Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this article is to defend the need of an „expanded“ view of the ontology of the social world and hence in the social sciences. In this field we have the opportunity to place on one level „the reality“ and „the knowledge“, the description of it. The dichotomy „the (social) world“ and „the language we use to describe it“ is essentially problematic and if this is not so visible in the natural sciences, it is obvious for the social sciences. The language or the knowledge of the social world is constitutive for this reality, the different ways of speaking about it imply different realities, not only different representations of it. This is not mere difference of vocabularies representing one and the same extension. If we accept such a vision we can acknowledge the reality of meanings and social symbols, on one hand, and the „constructed“ macro-concepts of the macro-sociologists, on the other. Both have the status of social fact, if we analyze them as knowledge structures.
