Summary/Abstract: Drawing on contemporary research in education, Cultural Studies and Translation Studies, the paper examines the role of children’s literature in building intercultural competence – something rarely discussed outside the sphere of ELT. In the Bulgarian context, where the overwhelming number of children’s books reaches their audience in translation, the translator’s intercultural competenceis of theessence. The paper analyses a corpus of examples from translations of children’s books in English published in Bulgaria over the past two decades. Outlining some trends in the approaches to cultural otherness, it identifies a range of problems related to the translators’ competence and highlights their possible impact on intercultural communication and the reception of the translated texts. In conclusion, the paper argues that the study of children’s literature translation and reception should be taught more systematically in translator training.
