Summary/Abstract: One of the biggest challenges any nation is faced with is shaping a strong and coherent identity discourse and the United States of America, in spite of the position assumed during the last centuries, has been the most challenged from this point of view. Thus, the present article aims at analysing the instruments that form and generate the American identity discourse (mainly liberty and surveillance) by analysing the work of one of the most debated and disputed American contemporary novelists, Paul Auster.
