Industrial disputes and strikes in Bulgaria – legislation and trends

Summary/Abstract: The issues of labour disputes and their settlement, and the strike and its development, should be considered in the general context of the political and socio-economic situations in each country. Like other countries in central and eastern Europe, Bulgaria is in transition from a command-administrative economy to a market-based one and to the democratisation of public life. The trade union movement is also undergoing a transition from its previous ‘transmission belt’ role to the independent and democratic representation of employees’ interests. Despite the common nature of the problems, this transition is unique for each of the ex-socialist countries. Within a period of ten years, the Bulgarian government changed ten times, featuring parties from all over the political spectrum. What does that mean for the process of reform and industrial relations on the level of both legislation and real industrial disputes?
