Summary/Abstract: Young people in any country are among the social groups which deserve special attention, owing to their specific position in terms of the future of the nation. In Bulgaria, as indeed in most central and eastern European countries, they find it difficult to find jobs, or are employed in temporary and unattractive low-paid jobs. No official data exist, but they can be assumed to represent a significant percentage of the numbers employed in the grey economy. Young people account for about one-third of the registered unemployed and a considerable proportion of discouraged job seekers. The Bulgarian labour market is still ‘insensitive’ to youth unemployment and hence, more often than not, migration is the chosen way out. In spite of government declarations that young people are among its priorities, and the first steps which have been made with the creation of the Ministry of Young People and Sports, there is no clear active policy regarding young people. Their successful placement in the labour market and integration in society, and a checked ‘brain drain’, are tasks awaiting resolution by the joint efforts of government, employers, trade unions and NGOs.
