Culture: Quality of Life Component

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to verify whether culture, in its functional and institutional aspect, has an impact on the quality of life of city residents. The author examines the concept of the quality of life from an economic point of view, citing, i.e., theory of T. Scitovsky. The analysis of the results of a literature review on the impact of culture on its socio-economic context allows to juxtapose them with selected elements of quality of life (health, life satisfaction, safety) included in indexes that measure the level of quality of life in cities. It leads to a conclusion, that participation in culture, access to broad and diverse cultural offer, good quality of public space, historic urban fabric constitute important elements of quality of life in cities. Thus, tasks of municipalities include support for cultural activities, protection of monuments as well as creation of public space.
