Summary/Abstract: Contemporary political and economic environment, under the increasing globalization, poses a serious challenge for the traditional profiling of political parties as to their stand towards economic freedom and interventions in the economy. It has been long held that the Left is more prone to direct economic interventionsm, strong redistribution policy and reforms. As opposed, the Right was linked to more respect for autonomous market functioning, trade liberalization, etc. The first aim of the paper was to present the evolution of selected countries’ governments policies with regard to economic interventionism in the period 1995-2007. On the basis of this comparative analysis, our aim was then to identify, to a certain extent, similarities and differences between the Left and the Right in their attitudes toward economic freedom. Finally we aimed at comparing/confronting the research findings with classical paradigms used in political profiling of parties. Our findings point to a fact that the ideologocial profile/position of an administration is of a less importance compared to its ability to induce positive results in terms of economic development and sustainable competitive position of the national economy at the international scene.
