Summary/Abstract: Security crisis situations (street demonstrations, terrorist attacks, fires, earthquakes, floods etc.) may worsen due to unpredictable mass behaviour and psycho-behavioural reactions related to an unmanageable crowd, one of them being mass panic. The decision-makers’ knowledge of the characteristics and mechanisms of manifestation of mass panic ensures the understanding of the possibilities to prevent and stop it in the start-up phase as well as to counteract the negative behavioural effects likely to occur on the short, medium and long term. The saviours’ efficient communication with the panicked crowd will undoubtedly lead to a return to normality. Moreover, knowing and complying with some basic rules of safe behaviour in a panicked crowd is vital for each individual.
