Summary/Abstract: In this article the author discusses Rousseau’s idea of equality, emphasizing that it refers to the very structure of the political in one of the greatest thinkers of political philosophy. The very possibility of politics is presented, as it is argued, in the evental form of the social contract. From this, politics appears as a rare but specific event that enables human freedom which in itself is intrinsically egalitarian. The way in which popular sovereignty is constituted here at the same time appears as a leading trace for contemporary thinking.
