Summary/Abstract: The impact of the Water Framework Directive on the ecological security of the Baltic Sea is large: it can be direct or indirect. An effective and coherent water policy should take into account the vulnerability of aquatic ecosystems, coasts and estuaries or bays, as their biological equilibrium is strongly influenced by the quality of inland waters flowing into The indirect impact is manifested by the fact that the ecological security depends on the status of inland waters and groundwater in the basin of the sea. Through the implementation of the provisions of the WFD “on land” we can in a great way affect the purity of marine waters and the process of their eutrophication. The biggest message of the WFD is to protect water resources for future generations and this way to implement the principle of inter generational security. Water management plans and national water and waste-water programs are created, which have to be consistent with the integrated management of water resources in the European Union.
