Summary/Abstract: The study presented here aims at detecting the cognitive development of the 5th and the 8th grade primary school students by questoning whether there is a difference between the usage of text-summarizing strategies used by each group. Development of cognitive abilities of the 5th and the 8th grade students are analyzed in terms of two sub-skills of the summarizing process, namely “selecting the basic units of the text” and “strategies used in making a summary out of these selected units”. Depending on the results of the study, we conclude that there are not clear distinctions between the summarizing skills of the two groups in terms of the mentioned sub-skills.
