Summary/Abstract: From a semiotic point of view, this study looks at the seminal issue of philosophical, aesthetic and linguistic reflection: the relationship between reality and cultural production and the resulting temptation for art to disguise convention from its consumer behind strong alibis of “naturalness”. Following în the footsteps of Charles Saunders Peirce and Umberto Eco, it goes on to cross-examine the inadequacy of reference and of truth as aesthetic criteria, on the one hand, and the validity of the so called semiotic triangle, including of the referent among the benchmarks of the sign, on the other. It combines a diachronic approach to the distrust of cultural convention, which has varied across different historical periods, with a review of some modern forms of “iconic” (mostly visual) representations. The latter are clear examples of the utopian confidence of the common sense, în a “natural” grounding of artefacts, as well as în the relationship of analogy between culture and the world.
