Summary/Abstract: The presented work is attempt to discuss and compare two metaphors: a river and a lightning in the prose of contemporary Russian writer Vladimir Makanin. Both idea developed by Heraclitus and borrowed from him by Makanin are related to life and fate, and describe thinking and spiritual development of man. Every metaphor creates some sequence of variants: a lightning — light, fire, passion, blow, thunder; a river — stream, curse of events, process. Makanin compares the opposite phenomena and terms. By showing transformational equivalence of opposites, he breaks our dogmatic thinking to express complexity and ambiguity of being.
